Why Dual degree can be a problem and the issue are in the way it is defined by Universities

In April, UGC will now allow the students to pursue two academic programs simultaneously keeping in view the of objectives envisaged in NEP 2020. There will be no separation between arts and sciences, between curricular and extracurricular activities, between vocational and academic streams, etc. to eliminate harmful hierarchies among, and silos between different areas of learning. The initiative will help students to exhibit multidisciplinary and a holistic education across the sciences, social sciences, arts, humanities, and sports for a multidisciplinary world to ensure the unity and integrity of all knowledge.

Although there seems to be many advantages for the students and with the advent of many new revolutions happening in the industry, this initiative will help students to be ready with skills required for Industry 4.0.

But there are challenges too in terms of implementation of Dual Degree Program for Students:

1. Lack of Flexibility for Universities: The statutory body of the varsity should be ready to implement and provide flexibility to students in terms to pursue Dual Degree in same time.

2. Limited option for Students: It will depend on the Universities for which all programs they will be able to implement the dual degree set up for a student. Due to rigid structure of university, it will depend on if student who opts for two degrees from two different universities will be able to take up the same as per his / her flexibility.

3. Affiliation System: Most of the Higher Education happens in Affiliated Mode. UGC need to provide clarity to student if they will be able to take up degree from two different college under a university for different programs.

4. Tie – up between Universities: As the flexibility to the student will depend on two university in case student opt to do intra university courses. UGC need to ensure the communication to students are clear about which may be the compatible universities.

5. Managing huge Workload for Students: It makes sense that earning two degrees simultaneously would equate to more work. In such a concentrated amount of time, the courses can feel overwhelming. Only students who believe they can handle the stress with their organization, preparation, and dedication should consider undertaking a dual degree program.
