Loyalty is not a quality that people inherently bring to a company upon joining. It's a trait that needs cultivation 🌱, a process in which founders play a crucial role. This cultivation, however, leans on our innate human nature - we are intrinsically loyal beings. This loyalty has allowed us to survive and thrive as tribes, as families, and as nations. It has seen us through pandemics 😷 and all manner of crises.
As I continue my own journey in entrepreneurship 🚀, I have observed this truth: Loyalty is a two-way street 🛣️. For loyalty to thrive within a team, founders must first demonstrate empathy, kindness, and a genuine interest in each team member's future and growth. Positively challenging the team, fostering an environment that encourages personal and professional growth, and ensuring that the workplace doesn't infringe on their ability to maintain a happy home life 🏠 are all essential elements.
Merely labeling your team as a 'family' doesn't make it so. This metaphor can be misleading and should be avoided. A workplace isn't a family; it's a business 🏢. We should treat it as such. Respect for your employees goes much further than offering high salaries. It's about challenging them to achieve what might seem impossible and ensuring that they experience growth every day.
Yet, the challenge of recruiting the right employees is substantial. Occasionally, we make hiring mistakes, and some individuals may feign loyalty. Such employees should be identified and let go promptly, for one bad apple 🍏 can indeed spoil the whole bunch.
