The Resurgence of Dumb Phones among Gen Z - A Path to Better Mental Health?

The winds of change are blowing through the mobile phone market, and somewhat unexpectedly, they're ushering in a blast from the past. Recent reports reveal a resurgence in the popularity of "dumb phones", especially among the digitally native Gen Z population. As people strive to decrease their screen time and disconnect from the ever-pervasive digital life, these pared-down devices that limit users' capabilities outside of texts and calls are making a comeback.

In the U.S., HMD Global, the maker of Nokia phones, is one of the companies catching this wind. They continue to sell millions of mobile devices reminiscent of the early 2000s, including traditional flip or slide phones with additional features like GPS or a hotspot. Interestingly, their feature flip phone sales were up in 2022, with tens of thousands sold each month in the U.S., even as global feature phone sales saw a dip.

The increasing demand for dumb phones is not just a passing fad, but a response to some very real concerns. The adverse effects of excessive smartphone use have been well-documented in various studies. Among the most common issues are sleep disturbances, decreased physical activity, poor mental health, and lower life satisfaction. The potential for addiction is also a significant concern, with the smartphone being the conduit for various addictive activities such as social media use, gaming, and even online shopping.

Yet, as the drawbacks of smartphones become increasingly apparent, the benefits of using dumb phones are being rediscovered. The primary advantage is the reduction in screen time, which can help mitigate the aforementioned health issues. Dumb phones also encourage a more mindful and intentional use of technology. As Joe Hollier, co-founder of Light, puts it, their aim isn't to create a "dumb phone", but a more intentional phone - a premium, minimal phone - which isn't inherently anti-technology, but promotes conscious choice in how and when to use technology.

Moreover, dumb phones can help users regain their time and attention, enabling them to focus on the world around them rather than the digital world inside their screens. This sentiment is echoed by the Luddite Club, a group founded by New York City teenagers who swapped their smartphones for flip phones. Their message to fellow teenagers is to spend more time getting to know themselves and exploring the world around them, which they find to be more fulfilling and real than the digital world.

While smartphones aren't going anywhere anytime soon, the rise of dumb phones among Gen Z shows a growing desire for a healthier relationship with technology. The return to simpler devices reflects a broader societal shift towards mindfulness and wellbeing, and it's a trend we might all learn something from.
